ASSIGNED
SPACE IN CHAPEL
In order to fully utilize the Larry
and Kathryn Smith Chapel and the Floyd and Juanita Smith Carillon, all
allocations of programming space will be made by the Office of Student
Activities at Penn State Behrend. The
basic assignments will be made at the beginning of each academic year,
but the Office of Student Activities reserves the right to reallocate
space during the course of the year providing:
- experience
justifies the change;
- new
conditions arise which make it essential;
- the
space as assigned is not being used adequately.
All unallocated space (meeting rooms
and worship space) will be scheduled through the Office of Student
Activities in the Reed Union Building.
Telephone 898-6171.

USE
OF SMITH CHAPEL (GROUPS AND ORGANIZATIONS)
- Religious
and spiritual programming by officially recognized campus offices
has preference over all other spiritual/religious programming.
Reservation of the Chapel for the above mentioned programs
must be made not less than two weeks in advance by completing a Room
Reservation Request Form and returning it to the Office of Student
Activities in the Reed Union Building.
Student organizations may schedule up to two (2) regular
group meetings up to two hours per week in the facility.
Certain weekends will be blocked in advance in anticipation
of wedding services.
- Other
programming by officially recognized campus student organizations
has second priority. If
unscheduled for weddings and religious and spiritual services the
Smith Chapel may be scheduled for meetings, musical, or cultural
practices or programs. The
facility must be scheduled through the Office of Student Activities
no less than two weeks in advance by completing a Room Reservation
Request Form.
- Religious
and spiritual programming by outside (non-campus) organizations has
third priority. An
off-campus organization must first communicate with the Office of
Student Activities at (814) 898-6171 and then receive approval
through the Spiritual and Religious Life Council to ensure that the intent of
the organization is consistent with college and university policies
and guidelines. Gaining this approval, the organization must then
reserve the Chapel through the Office of Student Activities in the
Reed Union Building and complete all needed materials as required.
- Other
programming by outside (non-campus) organizations has last priority.
Organizations should contact the Office of Student Activities
at (814) 898-6171 to facilitate this process.
- Room
layouts are displayed at the reception desk. ANY persons or organizations that used either/both of
these facilities are responsible for returning the rooms back to
their original set-ups. The
Penn State Behrend Maintenance Office must complete any substantial
movement of furnishings. Please
confer with the Office of Student Activities if you have questions.
- No
furniture will be moved in the Worship area without consent of the
Coordinator of Community Service and the Smith Chapel. A charge will be assessed to the group sponsoring the
event if furniture is moved.

USE
OF CHAPEL FOR WEDDINGS AND CHRISTENINGS/BAPTISMS
- Eligibility
University
community members may schedule a Saturday (or weekday during summer
months) wedding or christening/baptism in the Smith Chapel.
Weddings may be scheduled by persons with the stipulation that
the ceremony must meet the legal requirements of the Commonwealth of
Pennsylvania. These are on
a first come, first served basis and a fee is charged for the use of the
facility.
- Application
To reserve
the facility, contact the Smith Chapel at (814) 898-6609 and fill
out an application card. This
card must be returned two weeks after receiving the information.
Scheduling in advance is advisable due to the large number of
weddings normally scheduled. For
example, if a couple wishes to be married in June in the Chapel, the
wedding should be scheduled at least eight to ten months in advance.
- Fees
There will
be a charge for all weddings and christenings/baptisms.
Weddings include one rehearsal and four-hour wedding time block
commencing two hours before the event (ex:
10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. for a 12 noon wedding).
Christenings/baptisms include a one-hour time block.
If there are any additional requests involving University
personnel, an additional charge will be necessary.
- Arrangements
- The
individual scheduling the Chapel must agree to make their own
arrangements for the following services:
- clergy, priest or judge
- a qualified organist and/or other musician(s)
- florist
- fees for person officiating the ceremony,
florist, etc.
- dripless candles and candleholders
- Confetti, Rice,
or Rose Petals: NO
confetti, rice or rose petals are to be thrown at weddings in or on the grounds around
the Chapel.
- No
food or beverages are permitted in the Chapel worship space.
Food is permitted in other designated areas.
Food in the worship space and alcoholic beverages are
prohibited unless otherwise approved by the Director of Student
Affairs. Please
discuss this with the Coordinator of Community Service and the
Smith Chapel if you see the need for either.
- All
materials for use in the ceremony such as a cross, alter covers,
candle snuffers, etc., should be arranged with the person
performing the ceremony. It
is your responsibility to make these arrangements with the
individual officiating the ceremony.
