Vision Statement

Virtual Photo Tour

A successful college education is more than academic excellence.  Students should also be prepared to become better leaders - serving others locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally.  Through a series of service initiatives, the Center for Service Leadership seeks to involve students in meaningful service to campus, community, and society.  Service leadership is the enhancement of the out-of-class experience to help students learn through involvement in organized community service experiences.

Service Reports

The center compiles information regarding the service efforts of students and student organizations.  Awards and recognition programs help to say "thank you" to students involved in service activities.

Community Service Report Form

This form must be completed and will automatically be submitted to the Coordinator of Community Service and the Smith Chapel, located in the Smith Chapel.  You will then be included in the annual report and be considered for Community Service/Philanthropy Awards.

Simply type in your information and submit:  Community Service Report Form

Why Volunteer?

As students contemplate what they will do while  in college, it is hoped that they will  consider becoming involved in community service.  Nearly three-fourths of entering college freshmen were volunteers in high school, but only about half of new college students participate.  The rewards are great for both the server and the served, with participants learning and empowering each other.

Alternative Break Trips

The Center for Service Leadership in partnership with the student organization, Reality Check, offer service learning trips to students during University breaks.  Trips take place during Fall Break, Winter Break and Spring Break.  Numerous destinations will be available to interested students, faculty and staff.

Diehl Adopt-A-School Program

The office offers several tutoring and mentoring programs at Diehl Elementary School working with individual students and classes. Applications can be picked up at the Smith Chapel.

Volunteer Fair

A fair is held each fall to assist local agencies in the recruitment of student volunteers.

Leadership Training and Involvement

Leadership development activities are coordinated on an on-going basis for individual students and student organizations at the college.  Contact the Office of Student Activities at (814) 898-6171 for more information.

Student Organizations

Most Penn State Behrend clubs and organizations participate in volunteer activities throughout the year.  The Center links groups to local and national service agencies.

United Way

United Way is Penn State Behrend's official philanthropy and student support benefits the many Erie-area service providers.  The student United Way campaign involves students in city-wide projects such as the annual "Day of Caring".

Community Resource Handbook

The center has a comprehensive book of organizations and agencies in the Erie community who need volunteers.  Stop in to pick up a copy.  COMMUNITY RESOURCE HANDBOOK
