Guidelines for NSF Grant Submittals

Definition: These guidelines are meant to facilitate the preparation of submittals to NSF.  Projects must be coordinated with the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) at University Park and with the Behrend’s Senior Associate Dean of Research.  

Process:

  1. Contact the School Research Staff Coordinator to apply for an NSF FastLane account.

  2. Obtain and complete a School of Engineering Research Submittal

  3. Check the draft budget to ensure the most current rates are used

  4. Process the grant using NSF's FastLane fully automated web based system.  Complete instructions on how to use FastLane are available.

  5. Log into FastLane

  6. Using NSF FastLane, complete the following sections of the proposal package

  • PL/Co-PL Information
  • Cover Sheet (must state NSF 01-171 Major Instrumentation program solicitation)
  • Project Summary (included intellectual merit and broader impact of proposed activity)
  • Table of contents
  • Project Description - to include the following sections:

    • Results from prior NSF support
    • Research activities
    • Description of Research Instrumentation and needs
    • Impact of infrastructure projects
    • Project and management plans

  • Biographical Sketches
  • Budget and Funding (note budget form filled out within FastLane)
  • Budget justification
  • Current and Pending Support
  • Letters (this section includes letters from Industrial Partnership and RUI Impact Statement and quotes from equipment vendors if required)

    7.  Save the proposal upon completion.  The writer does not submit the          proposal

    8.  Work with the School Research Staff Coordinator to review the necessary forms and to coordinate the submittal to the Office of Sponsored Programs (OPS)
