Mechanical engineering is one of
the broadest, oldest, and largest branches of engineering. Built on a
foundation of physics, chemistry, and mathematics, this major teaches
you to be a problem solver.
Mechanical engineers research, develop, design, test, manufacture, and operate products ranging from automobiles to rocket engines. As a Penn State Behrend Mechanical Engineering major, you'll learn to use scientific and engineering methods to devise useful products in an economical way.
You'll also discover how to apply scientific principles, engineering analysis, and engineering design to solve unstructured problems. The Mechanical Engineering major prepares you for traditional professional practice and graduate school, and it also is excellent preparation for non-engineering careers such as technical management, business law, and sales.
In today's fast-changing world, it's important to be adaptable and know how to stay current. As a student of mechanical engineering, you'll learn how to continually challenge yourself and act professionally.
Is Mechanical Engineering for You?
Mechanical engineering requires a strong foundation in high school math and physics. It's also important to have a natural interest in how things work and how they might be improved.
Perseverance, imagination, and the ability to invent and analyze are traits of the successful mechanical engineer. If you are interested in less theoretical studies, you should consider Mechanical Engineering Technology as an alternative.
