SCHOOL OF HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES History Major (HSTBA) Program Chair: Dr. Michael Christofferson History is the oldest liberal arts discipline. History majors at Penn State Erie build a solid foundation in American and European history during their first two years of study, then select a course sequence for intensive study in their junior and senior years. Students might choose to expand on their American and European work or pursue the areas of African, East Asian, Latin American, or Middle Eastern history. The History program stresses both traditional and innovative methods of research, focusing on the analysis of written records. Majors are encouraged to think critically, explore the fundamental determinants of human behavior, and develop effective research and writing skills. Study of the past requires the most modern tools: research and coursework are enhanced by using the latest computer technologies. In addition to basic coursework, History majors are offered a variety of options and opportunities. Students can elect to pursue independent study or embark on an original research project. |
