SCHOOL OF HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES Student Involvement Student Research and Internships Political science majors usually undertake some research during their four years of study. The program is especially proud of Melissa Hayes, who was selected as a Truman Scholar in 1996, and Stephen Webb, who was named a Finnegan Fellow for Pennsylvania State Government in 2001. Many majors have been Schreyer Scholars. Some recent areas of research have involved State Government Takeovers of Failing Public School Districts, Criminal Disenfranchisement, the Role of Regionalism in American Foreign Policy, the International Court of Justice and the Internet, the Endangered Species Act, the constitutional right to privacy, land claims disputes among Native American tribes in western New York, labor union politics, border conflicts among Soviet successor states, the birth of the International Criminal Court, the future of NATO after the Cold War, and the creation of a Comprehensive Database for Multilateral Treaties. Students have held internships with the following individuals or institutions: Senator Arlen Spector, Senator Rick Santorum, Governor Tom Ridge, Representative Phil English, State Representatives Linda Bebko-Jones, Karl Boyes, and Tom Scrimenti, the Erie County Republican Party, and the Erie County Department of Health.
