6th Annual Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) Walk
September 20, 2008
Presque Isle State Park

PKD affects 12.5 million people worldwide, 600,000 Americans and 25,000 of those people live in Pennsylvania.  PKD affects more people than cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy, down syndrome and sickle cell anemia combined.  There is no cure for PKD and the only treatment is dialysis and a transplant.

Volunteers are needed to assist in setting up and taking down for walk, giving out t-shirts, helping with registration, kid table, etc... could also use a group of people to sign up and register to walk, walkers are so important this year to prove that people care about Polysystic Kidney Disease so our walk can continue next year.

The walk is $15 for pre registration, it includes your t-shirt and goodie bag and also some chinese auction tickets. There will be a free lunch after the walk and entertainment.

Presque Isle State Park
September 20, 2008


Students will be participating in the International Coastal Cleanup which is a world wide event. Students work outdoors picking up debris on the shoreline and collecting data on coastal debris.

Volunteers will check in at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center between 9:00 am _ 10:00 am. We will provide trash bags, data sheets pencils and gloves. Students will be assigned to a location on Presque Isle's beaches. Event is over at 12:00 pm.

Lake Erie-Allegheny Earth Force
September 20, 2008


International Coastal Clean Up Day!  Help participate in this nationwide event.  College students are needed to help collect data and pick up litter along local streams and Lake Erie Beaches.

If students want to experience what it takes to coordinate such an event they could attend the monthly planning meetings of the steering committee.  This can be a great introduction to community problem-solving and event planning.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

We are in need of volunteers to help with the Light the Night Walk on Tuesday, September 23rd at Jerry Uht Park.  We are in need of help for set up, registration, handing out shirts, food table, tear down & a variety of other jobs.  You can also paticipate in the  walk as well as volunteer.

Millcreek Township Recycling Program
September 27, 2008


Volunteers are needed for loading and unloading of donated textiles from cars, trucks and loading into tractor trailers for shipping. Able to lift 10 - 20 lbs.

The event runs from 9am - 1pm.  Volunteers are needed for these hours as well as from 2:30pm - 4:30pm to combine the trucks for shipping.

"Cake by the Lake" Celebration Cake Competition
April 29, 2009

Volunteers are needed now to help gather prize donations, recruit contestants, sell tickets, provide web support and other planning duties as they come up. On the date of the competition volunteers will be needed to help set up tables, transport supplies, take tickets, etc.

Big Brothers Big Sisters

Volunteers are needed for school based mentoring.  The mentoring is done right at the school for 1 hour per week for 8 school months.  Volunteers and children meet  utilizing the resources available within the school:  computer labs, the library, the gym, a classroom, or the schoolyard. 

As their friendship evolves over time, volunteers and children discover ways to make school and learning fun. 

Transportation is needed since the mentoring is done right at the school.

Brookside Fire Company

Training will be provided to students interested in volunteering as EMT's and firefighters.

Requirements: 18 years of age or older, positive attitude, one night a week minimum, and one monthly meeting.

Harborcreek Historical Society

Volunteers may help in various activites including photography and display projects, archival documentation and website development. Volunteer groups are also needed to help with upkeep of the Gospel Hill Burial Ground. 

The Harborcreek Historical Society, founded in 1994, has been in the Knowledge Park location since 1999.  The Society houses historical archives, folios, journals, school records and other references on Harborcreek families and area history. The Historical Society is the caretaker for the Gospel Hill Burial Ground which is along the Bayfront pathway, near the Logan House.  We also offer Penn State Erie internships.

Junior Achievement of Erie PA is looking for volunteers! Lake Erie-Allegheny Earth Force


College students needed for Marketing and Public Relations.  Volunteers will learn how to market a non-profit by helping with database, web page, e-mail lists, filing, clerical work, writing, etc.

Lake Erie-Allegheny Earth Force is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to empowering youth to make a difference in their world today, and taking the skills they learn with them into the rest of their lives. We are commited to engaging young people as active citizens who improve their environment and their communities now and in the future.

Lake Erie-Allegheny Earth Force

Long term volunteers are needed to assist in leading neighborhood programs.  Volunteers will assist in the facilitation of small group of youth (ages 10-18) toward successful completion of an Earth Force Project, using the Earth Force 6-step process.  Past projects have included the creation of community garden, storm drain stenciling, and global warming outreach programs.  Position requires a commitment of 2 hours a week (one evening) for 12-15 weeks.  LEA Earth Force will provide training, materials, and on-going program support throughout the intership.  Work study is available for those qualifying for PHEEA. 

LEA Earth Force is a non-profit organization whose motto is Youth for a Change!  Earth Force works with youth to help them create positive, lasting change in their communities.  Earth Force has afterschool programs with youth from low-income areas of the City of Erie at different sites (schools and neighborhood programs).  More information about our organization can be found at www.earthforce.org/section/offices/lea.

Rainbows

Beginning September 15, 2008, every Monday evening December 1, 2008.

Volunteers will be trained before September 15th.  The sessions last for 1 hour, 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm for 12 weeks.  Must be loving, kind and able to guide the children. 

This support group curriculum is for children who have suffered a significan loss, through separation, divorce.

Therapeutic Riding Equestrian Center (TREC) of Erie County

Volunteers age 14 years and older are needed to work with horses and individuals with special needs as sidewalkers, leaders and tack & grooming during class times.  Additional help is needed with farm chores year round.  Call for more information and class times when volunteers are needed.

Trinity Center

Volunteers are needed to help with home work assistance, help with big group games, help with dinner and interaciton with kids. 

Volunteers do not have to stay the whole time from 2:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m..  They can may choose their own hours with in those hours.  Any help is greatly appreciated.
