Get your hands dirty with Penn State Master Gardeners as you learn what it
takes to grow and maintain a garden. This camp will begin by investigating
the wonders of plant growth and soil structure, and end by planting a small
garden at the Penn State Behrend Early Learning Center. Each day will bring
a new theme with lots of fun activities, investigations, and projects to
take home. We’ll dig in the soil, plant seeds, experiment with different
kinds of plant propagation, and practice using gardening tools, as well as
taste plant-based food, learn how insects and plants help each other, take a
wildflower hike, and pot plants to take home.

Whether a film critic or a history buff, this class is for you. You’ll
discover the history behind Star Wars and its creator, George Lucas. Learn
how the plot of Star Wars mimics real-life history in Rome roughly 2,000
years ago. This class will recognize and discuss the huge impact this film
had in the world not only in the late 1970s but also upon its return as
another huge hit in the 1990s. Join us as we delve into history, and may the

contests, explore the college’s engineering facilities, and have lots of
fun. This class is for all girls and boys who want to learn about the
different fields of engineering.

through World War II? Join us as we travel back in time to examine this
profound period in history. We’ll examine the risks, the “what ifs,” and the
major players—Franklin D. Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, Hitler, Mussolini,
and Stalin. We'll research Nazi propaganda, the—Holocaust, and weapons of
mass destruction. You'll have an opportunity to voice your opinion during
class debate. We'll even build our own plane and hold our own mock trial!

willingness to view beauty in the commonplace. Students will explore how
photography can be a method of communication for nature appreciation and
environmental protection. We will study the natural world through our
cameras, with a focus on composition. This class will provide education and
inspiration for all students interested in nature photography. Camera and
film developing are provided by the program.

This class will utilize the Junior Achievement (JA) and Erie Times-News In
Education (NIE) outreach programs to educate, encourage, and actively
involve students in making smart decisions about investing, saving, and
managing money for a successful financial future. Students will participate
in exciting hands-on activities, talk with community leaders, play
interactive money computer games, and receive prizes for participation.
They’ll also take home an interactive computer program and newsletter with
directions for completing an online career assessment. In addition, students
will participate in a live Credit Card Game Show, presented by Penn State
Behrend’s Center for Credit and Consumer Research (CCCR). Play, learn, and

Participants in this class will explore Native American skills and
philosophy. Each student will learn how to live in harmony with nature and
how to practice the skills needed to survive in the event of an emergency.
This outdoor class will take place in the Penn State Behrend Outback and
will include some hiking. Sturdy shoes and socks are required. No sandals
are permitted; if they are worn the student will not participate. You will
build a camp and the class will take place at camp each day after the
students are checked in. Parents are invited to a demonstration on Friday at
3:00 p.m.

habitats to those on the Penn State Behrend campus.

Summer Sailing at the Bayfront Center for Maritime Studies

Learn to sail one of the BCMS’s yachts on beautiful Presque Isle Bay! Learn
to hoist the mainsail, trim a jib and take a turn at the helm as you
experience the fun and excitement of sailing. Other areas of instruction
include nomenclature, knot tying, meteorology, environmental science, basic
boating safety and beginning navigation. All boating safety rules will be
adhered to. Please note that this is a full-day class that meets from 9:00
a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily. Parents are asked to drop-off and pick-up their
children at BCMS at 40 Holland Street,
Erie. Transportation from Penn State Behrend will not be provided. A Penn

EXPIRED Improv
Have you seen ”Whose Line Is It Anyway?” Can you come up with creative
one-liners or stories? If so, this class is for you. Join us as we play some
of the same fun games and improv exercises that they use on the ABC show.
These games will help build your ability to think fast whether you are on
stage or in the school yard. This class will culminate in a performance
modeled after the hit Friday Night Improv put on each week by and for Penn
State Behrend students.

EXPIRED Outdoor Sports and Games
This class is designed for both boys and girls. Students will be introduced
to the fundamental skills of several sports, and skills will be tested
through the use of drills and daily scrimmages. The sports we will cover
include soccer, baseball/tee ball, basketball, flag football, and kickball.
Other common children's games will be played as well. This class will
encourage fun, exercise, and practice, all while enjoying the great outdoors!

EXPIRED World Music Drumming
NEW
Using the exciting drumming traditions of West Africa, students will build
important listening skills as they engage in this hands-on drumming
experience. They will also learn about African culture through maps, other
native instruments, vocabulary, and song lyrics. As a culmination of their
experience, students will end their week with a performance.
