Classes for 6-8 Year Olds
While we've concluded the 2009 summer
program, please feel free to peruse the following classes as a sampling of
what will be offered next year.

CLOSED Intro to Computer Literacy

Children will be introduced to many facets of computer literacy. They will
begin with basic keyboarding skills and be exposed to Microsoft Word through
the creation of various documents. Students will also learn how to access
information through the Internet and help create a group PowerPoint
presentation.

Animal Tracks
What made that track? It could be a raccoon, fox, deer, or maybe even a
bear! Is the animal coming or going? How can you tell? We will learn the
answers to these questions and much more!

CLOSED/FULL Slimy Science
This class will keep you up to your elbows in goop! Old clothes are a must
for this week of slimy recipe-making fun. Some of the ooey recipes that you
will create are: flubber, oobleck, play dough, monster bubbles, slime, gak,
milk paint, and finger paint

CLOSED/FULL You Can Dough It
Dough art is an especially exciting craft. You needn't be "artistic." Just
follow step-by-step instructions for beautiful results. Students will make
ornaments, sculptures, jewelry, and much, much more.

CLOSED One, Two, TREE!
NEW
This TREEmendous adventure camp will take advantage of Behrend's Arboretum
to explore different species of trees. Discover how to identify and care for
trees through reading, observing, drawing and journaling. Activities will
include a tree tour of the Penn State Behrend Arboretum, learning how to id
trees and how to use GPS.

CLOSED/FULL Introduction to Drawing
A little timid about drawing? Unsure about the proper use of pencils,
colored pencils, stumps, and erasers? Would you like to draw all day? (Well,
almost all day) Then this class is for you. Students will explore drawing
with a little math and science mixed in and viola! You get a fun-filled
class as you learn to draw animals, people, and landscapes.

Dare to explore! Students will have an outdoor adventure and experience the
joy of camping. Hike, play camp games, practice camp safety, explore
Four-Mile Creek...and have a great time while learning team leadership and
survival skills. Sturdy shoes and socks are required. Sandals are not
permitted.

CLOSED Acting for the Stage 1
Join us in fun games, hilarious skits, and group activities developed for
the stage. Laugh and learn many of the same techniques your favorite actors
use while preparing and performing their roles. The class will culminate
with a performance during the last thirty minutes of Friday’s class.

CLOSED Castle Crusaders

In this class, students will take a look at medieval castles and learn about
the people and lifestyle of this time period. Students will learn how
castles were built. We will then make plans and create a castle of our very
own from items you can find at home! Please note that due to class language
and activities students should have completed the 1st grade.

CLOSED/FULL Outdoor Adventures
Join us in the Penn State Behrend Outback as we enjoy outdoor activities
such as hiking, playing camp games, learning camp safety, exploring the
creek, making nature crafts, enjoying camp snacks, and participating in many
more exciting outdoor adventures! You're guaranteed to get dirty so come
prepared for class by bringing old sneakers or water shoes, a water bottle,
a towel, a backpack, a change of clothes, and other items that one might
bring on a hiking excursion. No couch potatoes or electronic games, please!

Don’t let the size of an ant fool you. This insect packs a punch! You can
”ant-ticipate” plenty of fun as you unmask the truth about the mighty ant
through observation of an ANT FARM, literature, activities, and crafts.

Students will participate in various class activities to increase their
understanding and enjoyment of dinosaurs. We will compare popular dinosaurs,
read about and research dinosaurs, dig for bones, build clay models, and
much more!

CLOSED/FULL Outdoor Sports and Games
This class is designed for both boys and girls. Students will be introduced
to the fundamental skills of several sports, and skills will be tested
through the use of drills and daily scrimmages. The sports we will cover
include soccer, baseball/tee ball, basketball, flag football, and kickball.
Other common children's games will be played as well. This class will
encourage fun, exercise, and practice—all while enjoying the great outdoors!

CLOSED/FULL Homemade Musical Instruments
Making homemade musical instruments can be fun. In this class students will
complete simple science experiments to understand how musical instruments
make sound. They will read stories about why musical instruments were
invented and how they were first used. Students will then make their own
musical instruments using both recycled and new materials. Join us as we
make music together!

Think math is all paper-and-pencil activities? Think again! In this class we
will explore concepts such as measurement, estimating, graphing, and adding
and subtracting, using M&Ms, dice, pasta noodles, straws, paper clips,
leaves, and flowers. Who thought learning math could be so much fun?

CLOSED/FULL Crafts from the Beach
NEW
If you love the thrill of looking for Lake Erie beach glass you’re sure to
enjoy a week spent making beach glass crafts, driftwood windchimes, greeting
cards, shadow boxes, bookmarks, ornaments, and more. We’ll learn the history
of Lake Erie beach glass, where it may have come from, and the best places
to hunt for it. Then we’ll head to the beach to search for glass of our own.

CLOSED ABCs of Martial Arts
Students will learn the Agility, Balance, Coordination, and the other
twenty-three corresponding letters that teach self-confidence, self-control,
self-discipline, and self-defense. Practice a combination of kicks, punches,
and parries, and learn to escape from the most commonly applied street
holds. Comfortable clothing required! A demonstration will be held during
the last hour of the Friday class. Families are invited to attend.

CLOSED Kindermusik Adventures: Tell Me A Tale NEW
Through storytelling, students will develop an early awareness of rhythm,
movement, singing, and drama. Each class features a new tale from around the
world, explored through multi-instrument and multicultural elements. It's an
around-the-imagination adventure of the greatest stories from Europe,
Malaysia, South Africa and more.

CLOSED/FULL Jungle Adventures
Lions and tigers and bears . . . oh my! Join us for Jungle Adventures
where students will have the chance to learn about a variety of animals that
live in the jungle. We will investigate where these animals live, what they
eat, and how we can protect them. On the last day of class we will take an
"expedition" to the Erie Zoo where students can see all of the animals they
learned about during the week. Please note: a parent/guardian must
provide transportation and accompany their children at the zoo. The program
will NOT assume responsibility for children during the field trip.
