This class offers children the opportunity to be creators of their own book.
This exciting class assists the children in improving writing skills while
having fun. Please note that due to class language activities students
should have completed the 3rd grade.

Outdoor Sports and Games
This class is designed for both boys and girls. Students will be introduced
to the fundamental skills of several sports, and skills will be tested
through the use of drills and daily scrimmages. The sports we will cover
include soccer, baseball/tee ball, basketball, flag football, and kickball.
Other common children's games will be played as well. This class will
encourage fun, exercise, and practice, all while enjoying the great outdoors!

Powerful PowerPoint
Use Microsoft PowerPoint to turn a school report or project into a powerful
slideshow presentation sure to capture your teacher’s attention! Impress
your family by creating a slideshow using templates and presentation
designs. Add text, clip art, word art, color, sounds, transitions, and
animations. Participants are expected to come up with a topic of interest
and develop a slide show. Students should have some computer knowledge prior
to taking this course.

Stained Glass Mosaic
Design and create your own mosaic! Students will learn the history and
techniques of mosaic art, then create their own mosaic artwork using stained
glass and ceramic tile.

Dance to the Music

Join us for a fun-filled week of dance, dance, dance! Students will learn to
count music, proper dance terms, basic dance techniques, and basic dance
combinations. The week will culminate with students performing their dance
routines to show off their new moves.

CLOSED Olympic Adventures
With the upcoming “One World, One Dream” Beijing Olympics just weeks away,
learn about the history of the modern Olympic Games while polishing your
skills at various real and wacky Olympic events. Start off the week by
creating your own country, including its flag, and selecting events for the
competition. As the week progresses, discover fun facts about the Games that
you never knew and prepare for Friday’s competition.

CLOSED Engineering MythBusters
Based on Discovery Channel’s hit TV show “MythBusters,” this class explores
engineering concepts ”just to see what happens.” Which type of racing car
goes faster? What are the different kinds of bridges, are they safe, and how
do we build one? How does an electric circuit work? We will have design
contests, explore the college’s engineering facilities, and have lots of
fun. This class is for all girls and boys who want to learn about the
different fields of engineering.

Golf: Beginner Level 2
Young golfers with some experience will have a chance to concentrate on
swing and short-game skills improvement. Golf clubs are NOT provided and
must be brought by the participant. A driver, a putter, and a 3-, 5-, and
9-iron are recommended. This is an outdoor class, so don’t forget your
sunscreen!

Pencil Adventures
NEW
Throughout this class students will explore drawing with pencils and colored
pencils. They will review drawing techniques and will develop their own
style. Believe it or not, math and science will be addressed and students
will see how they’re hidden in art. Subject matter will range from
landscapes to drawing animals.

All Wired Up
Come and join us as we learn the basic concepts of parallel, series, and
open and closed circuits. Working with batteries, switches, and wires, we’ll
learn about electricity. We’ll build our own circuit boards, and have fun as
a team making a game-show board that lights up or buzzes when the correct
answer is chosen.

If you love the thrill of looking for Lake Erie beach glass you’re sure to
enjoy a week spent making beach glass crafts, driftwood windchimes, greeting
cards, shadow boxes, bookmarks, ornaments, and more. We’ll learn the history
of Lake Erie beach glass, where it may have come from, and the best places
to hunt for it. Then we’ll head to the beach to search for glass of our own.

Kids and Money

This class will focus on the concept of money. Even at a young age it’s
important for kids to know basic skills about spending and saving money.
During the week we will learn not only about the value of money, but how we
earn money, how we save money, how we spend money, and how we keep track of
our money. We will also discuss the difference between paper money and
credit cards, and what it means when there is a sale at a store.

Homemade Musical Instruments
Making homemade musical instruments can be fun. In this class students will
complete simple science experiments to understand how musical instruments
make sound. They will read stories about why musical instruments were
invented and how they were first used. Students will then make their own
musical instruments using both recycled and new materials. Join us as we
make music together!

Your house is a laboratory! We’ll take things apart just to see what’s
inside and how they work. We’ll make bubble bombs, lava lamps, and sticky
skyscrapers from common ingredients and then compare our results to see what
works best in each experiment. We’ll learn all about the different ways you
can use things around the house. These fun activities will be safe, easy to
do, and a great way for young students to get a taste of science through
investigation.

Learn the basic terms and techniques of knitting while creating squares and

Use your imagination and math skills to design and decorate the spaces you
live and play in! We’ll discuss measurement, ratio, proportion, and the art

end the week with a blueprint of what they want their space to look like.

Join us in fun games, hilarious skits, and group activities developed for

Get your hands dirty from Penn State Master Gardeners as you learn what it
takes to grow and maintain a garden. This camp will begin by investigating
the wonders of plant growth and soil structure, and end by planting a small
garden at the Penn State Behrend Early Learning Center. Each day will bring
a new theme with lots of fun activities, investigations, and projects to
take home. We’ll dig in the soil, plant seeds, experiment with different
kinds of plant propagation, and practice using gardening tools, as well as
taste plant-based food, learn how insects and plants help each other, take a
wildflower hike, and pot plants to take home.

EXPIRED Surviving the Outback
Participants in this class will explore Native American skills and
philosophy. Each student will learn how to live in harmony with nature and
how to practice the skills needed to survive in the event of an emergency.
This outdoor class will take place in the Penn State Behrend Outback and
will include some hiking. Sturdy shoes and socks are required. No sandals
are permitted; if they are worn the student will not participate. You will
build a camp and the class will take place at camp each day after the
students are checked in. Parents are invited to a demonstration on Friday at
3:00 p.m.

EXPIRED Wizards, Witches, and Goblins…Oh My!
Use your imagination and writing skills to create a fantasy world of your
own. Reminiscent of Harry Potter and other popular stories, we will tap our
brain power to develop our stories’ heroes and villains. As we travel the
paths our minds create we will plot our own battles and victories. Look out,
we may need to invent potions and spells to keep us safe! We might even get
to challenge our opponents for the ”House Cup.” But beware—once we begin,
there’s no turning back!
