Baseball Opens AMCC Championships with Win over Pitt-Bradford

The Penn State Behrend Lions opened the AMCC Baseball Championships right where they left off during regular season conference play, winning against #4 seed Pitt Bradford (21-17) by a score of 8-0 on Friday, May 9 at the Behrend baseball field.  The blue and white got a monster effort from junior pitcher David Koerbel (Pittsburgh/Central Catholic) who threw a complete game shutout to advance Behrend to Saturday with a win.

In the bottom of the first Behrend loaded the bases and got a run across when David Miller’s (St. Marys/St. Marys) infield single scored Tom Pasinski (West Mifflin/West Mifflin) to give Behrend the 1-0 lead after one inning of play.

In the third Behrend added two more runs as Zach Sullivan’s (Oil City/Oil City) RBI single scored Geoff Lang (Pittsburgh/North Allegheny) and Ryan Liddle (DuBois/DuBois) drove in Miller to make it 3-0 heading to the fourth inning.

In the fourth inning, Pasinski and Dustin Dubensky (Punxsutawney/Punxsutawney) reached base before Adam Martin (Rochester/Rochester) crushed a ball for a double driving in both runners and making it a 5-0 game.

The Panthers got two runners aboard in the top of the seventh before Koerbel came through and struck out two consecutive batters to end the inning and keep the shutout going.  Miller singled and advanced to second in the seventh inning before Sullivan came to the plate with two outs and doubled, bringing Miller home to add another run, increasing Behrend’s lead to 6-0 going to the eighth.

The blue and white were at it again in the bottom of the eighth inning.  After Josh Fyffe (Fredonia/Sharpsville) and Pasinski reached base, Dubensky singled in Fyffe and then Martin followed it up by driving in Pasinski with a single of his own as Behrend increased its advantage to 8-0.  That would be the final score as Koerbel finished off the complete game shutout, advancing Behrend to Saturday with a win.

In the first game of the day on Friday, the Frostburg State Bobcats (22-13) used an offensive explosion to put away the Lake Erie Storm 17-6.

In the third game of the day, Pitt-Bradford rebounded from its earlier loss and got some key hits to eliminate Lake Erie (17-27) by a score of 8-4.
