Behrend Lions Shut Down Lake Erie for
Doubleheader Sweep
The
Behrend Lions baseball team swept Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference
(AMCC) rival Lake Erie in a doubleheader at the Behrend fields on Wednesday
to improve to 22-10-1 overall and 10-6 in the AMCC.
Behrend wins game one by a score of 4-2 behind solid pitching from senior
Ray DeVaul (Saegertown/Saegertown) and freshman Ryan Smith
(Franklin/Franklin). DeVaul went five innings giving up two runs and
striking out eight batters, while Smith pitched the final two innings
without yielding a hit. At the plate, sophomore second baseman Shane
Scott (Stoneboro/Lakeview) smacked three hits and drove in two runs, while
junior shortstop Mike Stetz (Johnstown/Bishop McCort) had one hit and scored
two runs.
In game two the Storm (14-24, 6-12) scored in the top of the first inning
but that would be all senior pitcher Chris McCartney (Pittsburgh/Baldwin) would allow, as Behrend gets the sweep with a 5-1 victory in game
two. McCartney pitched a complete game striking out nine without
giving up an earned run. Sophomore third baseman Brent Sullivan
(Wellsboro/Wellsboro) had two hits and scored two runs for the blue and
white while junior catcher Gabe Stephenson (State College/State College)
also had two hits with one RBI.
With the win Behrend assures itself of hosting a first round AMCC playoff
matchup, as they will finish at least as the fourth seed for the AMCC
Tournament.
On
Thursday, April 27 the blue and white will wrap up their homestand with a
2:00 p.m. doubleheader against Allegheny. The Behrend Lions finish
AMCC play on Saturday when they travel to Hilbert for a doubleheader
beginning at 1:00 p.m.
