Behrend Hosts Medaille in First-Round of 2006 AMCC Baseball Playoffs

The Penn State Behrend baseball team (25-13) is the number-four seed entering the 2006 AMCC playoffs and will host the fifth-seeded Medaille Mavericks in the first-round on the Behrend diamond this Saturday, May 6.

Behrend is making its seventh appearance in the conference tournament in eight years, while the Mavericks are playing in their first league tournament since joining the AMCC two years ago.

The best-of-three series begins at 9:00 a.m. followed by game two at noon. The third game is an if necessary contest that would be played at 3:00 p.m. The winner then advances to play in the AMCC final four double-elimination event on Friday, May 12, against the number-one seed. There are regular-season games being played on Tuesday, May 2, to determine the number-one seed and host of this year's baseball tournament.

"We are fortunate to be playing at home this Saturday," said head coach Paul Benim. "Generally speaking we play well on our diamond, but we know Medaille will come here ready to play and it should be some good baseball."

Behrend concluded AMCC regular-season play with a 12-6 mark and the twenty-five wins are the fifth most in the history of the program. In the regular-season match-up between Behrend and the Mavericks the teams split in Buffalo, NY. Behrend won game one 8-0 behind a four-hit shutout from freshman David Koerbel (Pittsburgh/Central Catholic). Shane Elzer (Washington/Trinity) and Andrew McNelly (Somerset/Somerset) each had a pair of hits. Rich Seeger took the loss for Medaille while Tom Lyman had a pair of hits. In game two, Medaille out hit Behrend 7-6 for a 6-1 win.

A season ago, the blue and white posted an identical 12-6 mark during league play and went 3-2 in the conference tournament losing in the championship game.  Behrend posted a 27-17 record and advanced to the ECAC playoffs for the third time in four years.
