Shane Elzer Named Behrend's 2006 Male Athlete of the Year

This year's 2006 James Frye Male Athlete of the Year is senior Shane Elzer (Washington/Trinity). He was honored on Sunday, April 30, at Behrend's Annual Athletics Picnic.

Elzer has been a four-year member of the baseball program. He currently leads the team in batting average at .417, hits (48), triples (4), RBIs (35), slugging percentage (.609), and on-base percentage at .511. Elzer has committed only one error in the past two seasons. He has guided the program to a 107-56-2 mark during his time in uniform.  

He is the program's all-time leader in triples with 23 and currently ranks second in doubles with 37and walks with 79, third all-time in RBIs with 128, sixth in hits at 161 and games played with 141, seventh in runs scored with 108, and tenth all-time in career average at .379.

The Penn State Behrend baseball team (25-13) is the number-four seed entering the 2006 AMCC playoffs and will host the fifth-seeded Medaille Mavericks in the first-round on the Behrend diamond this Saturday, May 6. The best-of-three series begins at 9:00 a.m. followed by game two at noon. The third game is an if necessary contest that would be played at 3:00 p.m. The winner then advances to play in the AMCC final four double-elimination event on Friday, May 12, against the number-one seed. There are regular-season games being played on Tuesday, May 2, to determine the number-one seed and host of this year's baseball tournament.
