Baseball Selected to Play in 2006 ECAC Southern Region Championships on Friday, May 19, at 1:00 p.m. Against Keystone

For the fourth time in five years the Penn State Behrend baseball team has earned a berth into the ECAC Southern Region Baseball Championships.

"We are really fortunate to be invited to the ECAC Tournament," said head coach Paul Benim. "It is a high-quality event and these are four really good baseball teams. The squad that wins this will have accomplished a great deal."

Behrend (28-16-1) is the number-three seed and will play the number-two seed Keystone College (29-11) on Friday, May 19, at 1:00 p.m. Keystone is the defending Southern Region Champions after defeating Washington & Jefferson 6-0 in the 2005 ECAC Tournament title game. Washington & Jefferson (32-13) is the host and top-seeded team and will battle Villa Julie (29-15) at 10:00 a.m. The winners will meet in the 4:00 p.m. championship game.

The blue and white posted the third most wins in school history with 28 and finished third at the AMCC Championships last weekend. Behrend is led by senior Shane Elzer (Washington/Trinity) who is hitting .410 with 39 RBIs and Brian Hart (Valencia/Mars) who is batting .361 with a home run and 14 RBIs. On the mound senior Chris McCartney (Pittsburgh/Baldwin) has posted a 10-2 mark along with a 2.36 ERA while freshman David Koerbel (Pittsburgh/Central Catholic) is 5-0 on the hill with a sharp 3.06 ERA.

Washington and Jefferson, who hits .329 as a team, is led offensively by Matt Pellis who hits at a .418 clip and has driven in 28 runners. The staff is guided by Ian Poole and his 7-0 mound mark. Keystone earned a 20-1 mark in NEAC conference play and is paced by David Adamchick's .429 average. Leading the Giants mound efforts is Dominick Bartoli's 5-2 record. Villa Julie's Matt Waltrop is batting .434 with a team-high 43 RBIs and Gary Sanders is 6-3 on the bump with a 2.82 ERA.

A year ago, Behrend also earned a number-three seed into the ECAC Tournament and lost 13-7 to W & J. In 2002 and 2003, Behrend hosted the Southern Region Tournaments and captured back-to-back championships while posting a 68-18 two-year mark.
