Behrend Has Several Named to 2006 Baseball
All-AMCC Team
The
Penn State Behrend baseball team had several players honored with selection
to the recently released 2006 AMCC Baseball All-Conference team. The
Behrend Lions saw two players named to the first team, and three players
named to the second team, as well as the league's Newcomer of the Year.
Senior outfielder Shane Elzer (Washington/Trinity) was named First
Team All-AMCC. He led the AMCC in on base percentage (.500) and
doubles (18), was second in the league in batting average (.410), and fourth
in runs batted in (39) . Elzer, the 2005-06 Behrend Male Athlete of
the Year, was previously named to the all-conference second team in 2005,
and the first team in 2004.
Sophomore second baseman Shane Scott (Stoneboro/Lakeview) was the other
Behrend Lion to be named First Team All-AMCC. He batted .352, the
third highest average for the blue and white. Scott recorded 83
assists which ranked tenth in the AMCC, and was an integral part of a
Behrend defense that ranked first in putouts (1016), first in assists (445),
and fourth in fielding percentage (.945).
Senior pitcher Chris McCartney (Pittsburgh/Baldwin), junior catcher Gabe
Stephenson (State College/State College), and junior shortstop Mike Stetz
(Johnstown/Bishop McCort) were all named Second Team All-AMCC.
McCartney was among the league leaders in several categories this season.
The Behrend hurler led the league in wins with ten, setting a new Behrend
record in the process. McCartney was also second in the AMCC in innings pitched
(79.1), third in strikeouts (74), and third in earned run average (2.38).
Stephenson batted .311 for the blue and white. He was fourth in the
league in fielding percentage (.996) and fifth in putouts (213) The
catcher also threw out 12 runners attempting to steal, which ranked third in
the AMCC. Stetz was fourth in the AMCC in runs scored (38) and third
in stolen bases (19), as well as second on his team in hits (44). He
was also a stellar fielder for the Behrend Lions as he led the league in
assists (123) while fielding at a .910 clip.
Freshman pitcher Dave Koerbel (Pittsburgh/Central Catholic) got his career
off to a great start as he was named 2006 AMCC Baseball Co-Newcomer of the
Year. Koerbel was fifth in the AMCC in earned run average (3.04) while
finishing with a 5-0 record.
Head coach Paul Benim said, "The guys named to the first and second team are
all deserving. Statistically they had very special seasons."
Behrend (28-16-1) recently received a bid to the ECAC South Region
Tournament which will take place May 19 and 20. The #3 seed Behrend
Lions will battle #2 seed Keystone College (29-11) at 1:00 p.m. on Friday,
May 19 in the ECAC semifinals hosted at Washington & Jefferson College.
