Behrend Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Medaille

Behrend baseball had their first home games of the season when they hosted the Medaille Mavericks for a doubleheader on Wednesday, March 28.  The men came from behind to claim game one 4-2 and then in the second game fell to Medaille 3-1 in a marathon battle lasting 15 innings. Baseball is now 9-4 overall and 1-3 in AMCC play.

The Mavericks struck first in game one with a run in the top of the third, but Behrend would tie the game in the bottom of that inning off an RBI single by Jonathan Gray (State College/State College).  Medaille reclaimed the lead in the top of the fourth with a Tom Wasielewski single.  However, Gray would come up big again in the sixth when he led off with a double.  A string of three singles would allow Behrend to come from behind and claim the game 4-2.

In game two Medaille would again claim an early lead going up 1-0 in the third inning and holding that lead until the 4th inning.  In the bottom of the fourth a deep sacrifice fly by Andrew McNelly (Somerset/Somerset) scored Josh Fyffe (Fredonia/Sharpville) to knot the game at 1-1.  Ten innings later, the game remained deadlocked in a pitching duel at 1-1.

In the top of the fifteenth, the Mavericks would break through, with the game winning runs.  After loading the bases the Mavericks would score two runs when an errant throw from second allowed Medaille’s Tom Wasielewski and Nick Andreassi to score.

Behrend got a valiant effort on the mound in relief from Ryan Smith (Franklin/Franklin) who threw nine and a third innings of scoreless relief giving up zero runs and striking out three.

Baseball is next in action on Saturday, March 31 at home when the blue and white host Mt. Aloysius in an AMCC doubleheader set for 1:00 p.m.
