Baseball Grabs Two Non-Conference Victories Over Fredonia State

Penn State Behrend baseball took both games of a doubleheader against non-conference opponent Fredonia State on Thursday, April 19.  Behrend improves to 17-8 overall and remains tied for second place in the AMCC at 7-5.

Fredonia jumped out early in game one, going up 3-0 in the first inning off three straight base hits.  Behrend got one run back in the fourth as Tim Nebel (Butler/Butler) drove in Jonathan Gray (State College/State College) when he golfed a single into left field.  The blue and white then rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning, getting three more runs and the win.  The scoring in the seventh began when Josh Fyffe (Fredonia/Sharpsville) produced his fourth hit of the game and drove in pinch-runner Jarryd Pearson (Erie/Iroquis).  Then with two runners on Gabe Stephenson (State College/State College) lined the game-winning double just inside the third base line that scored both Mike Stetz (Johnstown/Bishop McCort) and Fyffe for the 4-3 victory.  Fyffe was 4-4 in game one and scored the game-winning run from first base.

Behrend went up two runs in the first inning of game two when three straight hitters reached base.  The blue and white struck again with two more runs in the fourth.  Behrend capitalized off a Fredonia error and then Ryan Liddle (DuBois/DuBois) knocked Andrew McNelly (Somerset/Somerset) in with a sacrifice fly. Brian Hart (Valencia/Mars) then drove Jason Bartlett (Erie/Iroquois) home with a double just inside the first base line.  The blue and white used three pitchers to complete the one-hit shutout as Charles Zimoski (Oil City/Oil City), Ben Cain (Venetia/Peters Township), and Ryan Smith (Franklin/Franklin) all appeared in the 4-0 victory.

Next up for Behrend baseball will be a doubleheader on the road against first-place La Roche.  The game is scheduled for Saturday, April 21 at 1:00 p.m.
