Baseball Grabs Two AMCC Wins Against the Hilbert Hawks

State Behrend baseball swept a late-season doubleheader on Thursday, April 26 against AMCC opponent
Hilbert. Behrend improves to 22-9 overall and grabs two
important conference wins to move to 10-6 in the AMCC,
while the Hawks fall to 5-21, and
2-14 in the conference.
Behrend got on the board right away in game one, as Brian Hart
(Valencia/Mars) came home on a sacrifice fly from Gabe Stephenson
(State College/State College). Tony Kordecki (New Brighton/New
Brighton) stole home on a double steal and Mike Stetz
(Johnstown/Bishop McCort) scored on a single in the second, to make
the score 3-0 after two innings. Glen Ufland got Hilbert on the
board in the fourth when he drilled a home run over the 400 foot
sign in center field. Hilbert would then tie the game in the top of
the fifth as their bats came to life and led the inning off with a
single and a double. Another Hilbert run in the sixth put the Hawks
up 5-4. Behrend came back for the win in the bottom half of that
inning, capitalizing off a mixture of base hits and walks to take
the game 6-5.
The blue and white came out fired up in game two, lighting the
scoreboard up for six runs in the first inning. Behrend’s first
five hitters all reached base and eventually scored. Jon Gray
(State College/State College) had a clutch hit, knocking in three of
those six Behrend runs. Hilbert would make things interesting
by getting four runs back in the top of the fourth inning. The
lead would hold up for the blue and white as David Koerbel
(Pittsburgh/Central Catholic) came on in relief of Charles Zimoski
(Oil City/Oil City)with two outs in the sixth inning and would
strike out four of the five batters he faced to close it out for the
Behrend Lions.
Next up for Behrend baseball will be a doubleheader on the road
against Penn State Altoona. The game is scheduled for Saturday,
April 28 at 1:00 p.m.
