Behrend Picked to
Win Baseball AMCC Championship in Preseason Poll
The Penn State Behrend baseball team has been picked
to take away the 2008 AMCC baseball championship title. The recently
released poll is voted on by AMCC coaches.
Last year Behrend finished the regular season in fourth place and fell to
Pitt-Bradford in the first round of the AMCC Tournament. The blue and
white have not won an AMCC title since 2003, where they went on to also win
the ECAC Championship as well.
Junior
pitcher
David Korbel (Pittsburgh/Central
Catholic) was selected as the Preseason Pitcher of the Year. Koebel
was selected to the AMCC first-team All-Conference last season for his tremendous
efforts. David posted a 2.87 ERA and struck out 55
hitters in 53.1 innings, while completing four games.
His only loss of the season was a 2-1 loss to reigning champions Frostburg
State.
Sophomore
short-stop Josh Fyfe (Fredonia/Sharpsville) was picked as a player to watch
in 2007 as well. As a freshmen starter, Fyfe was named as last year's
Newcomer of the Year and selected for the First-Team All-Conference.
With a .394 batting average, he led the team with nine doubles and 33 RBI's.
Rounding out the top five from the preseason poll was Frostburg State
finishing close behind Behrend. Following last year champs were La Roche,
Pitt-Bradford, and Medaille college.
The blue and white will travel to Port St. Lucie, FL on March 9 through the
15 for spring training, where the men will play nine games.
AMCC conference play begins Saturday March 22, when the Behrend Lions will
open up season play against Frostburg State. The winner of the AMCC
conference tournament will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III
tournament.
