Behrend Baseball Collects Six Wins During Spring Break Competition

The Penn State Behrend baseball team won six of eight games over spring break, during early season competition in Florida.  The Behrend Lions smashed opposing pitching in the six wins, outscoring opponents 48-13, and were competitive in both losses, falling by one run and two runs in those games.

Coach Paul Benim stated, "O
ur program's spring training week was really a good test for our squad.  The week itself is demanding and when you play good teams it makes it much more challenging.  In six of our eight games we were tested by facing the opponent's number one or two pitchers, and we survived and at times excelled in those situations."

Offensively, Behrend got strong production from Adam Martin (
Rochester/Rochester), Dustin Dubensky (Punxsutawney/Punxsutawney), Geoff Lang (Pittsburgh/North Allegheny), and Josh Fyffe (Fredonia/Sharpsville).  Martin, a senior, knocked out 11 hits, with 15 total bases, and 11 RBIs.  Dubensky, a sophomore, had six hits and eight RBIs.  Lang, a sophomore, scored nine runs, had six hits, and walked eight times.  Fyffe, a sophomore, scored six runs on six hits.

Behrend also got strong pitching on the trip, as Benim said, "Our pitching was a real positive, the staff really stepped up.  We played strong defensively and made only one physical error over the final four games and both pitching and defense were a key to a successful week."

Andrew Chrobak (New Castle/Laurel), David Koerbel (Pittsburgh/Central Catholic), and Blake Pavlik (Apollo/Kiski Area) each picked up two wins on the trip.  All three lead the pitching staff in key categories early in the season.  Pavlik is tops in ERA at 0.87, Koerbel leads in strikeouts with 22, and Chrobak holds opponents to just a .183 batting average.

Behrend is next scheduled to play a doubleheader on March 26 at AMCC opponent Medaille.  The first game is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
