Behrend Baseball Continues Winning Streak with
Win Over Grove City

On Thursday, April 3 the Penn State
Behrend Lions edged the Grove City Wolverines 6-5 in ten innings at the
Behrend Field with Jon Gray’s (State College/State College) walk-off RBI single.
Both starting pitchers began the game throwing well as the game was
scoreless entering the third inning. In the top of the third Grove City got
on the board with a run on two Wolverine hits. Behrend would respond in the
bottom of the inning as Josh Fyffe (Fredonia/Sharpsville) singled and stole
second, before Dustin Dubensky (Punxsutawney/Punxsutawney) singled
him home to tie the game at 1-1. Dubensky would steal second and advance to
third on the throw, before Adam Martin’s (Rochester/Rochester) single gave
Behrend a 2-1 advantage.
Grove City loaded the bases and
scored on a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 2-2 in the top of the fifth
inning. The Wolverines would then take a 3-2 lead on an unearned run in the
sixth. Behrend responded by coming back with a run of its own to forge a 3-3
tie in the seventh inning.
Next it was the Wolverines turn to answer, as Grove City scored two runs in
the top of the ninth to take a 5-3 lead. The blue and white would enter the
bottom of the ninth down two runs and in danger of snapping a six-game
winning streak. Behrend would rally once again, getting two runners aboard
before Dubensky came through in the clutch with a one-out double scoring
both runners and knotting the game up at 5-5. A double play ended the
rally, sending the game to extra innings.
In the bottom of the tenth Behrend got consecutive walks to load the bases
before sophomore outfielder Gray smacked the game-deciding walk-off single
into left field for the 6-5 win and Behrend’s seventh straight victory.
Next up for the blue and white is a home game on Saturday, April 5
against Penn State Altoona. The doubleheader is set for 1:00 p.m. and will
be broadcast on the Image Sports network.
