Baseball Extends Streak to Nine Games After Defeating Altoona

On Saturday, April 5 the Penn State Behrend Lions baseball team defeated Penn State Altoona 2-0 in the first game and 5-1 in game two, extending its winning streak to nine games and remaining undefeated in AMCC play.  The blue and white are now 14-4 on the season, with a 6-0 mark in conference play.

In game one, the Behrend Lions jumped on top in the bottom of the second inning.  Ed Kessler (Bethel Park/Bethel Park) hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring in teammate Joe Breiter(Finleyville/Ringgold) and put the men up 1-0.  Then in the third, after a Dustin Dubensky (Punxsutawney/Punxsutawney) double, Geoff Lang (Pittsburgh/North Allegheny) would also double to bring in Dubensky for the blue and white's second and final run of the game.  Pitcher David Koerbel (Pittsburgh/Central Catholic) recorded his fourth win of the season and remains undefeated in conference play.  Koerbel gave up only two hits and struck out nine batters during his seven innings of work.

In game two, it was much more Behrend Lions action.  Jon Gray (State College/State College) would get the blue and white started off, hitting a double in the bottom of the first to put him in scoring position.  Dubensky would step up to hit a routine single that would bring Gray in and put the men up 1-0.  The blue and white would make it a 3-0 game in the fourth, with a Zach Sullivan (Oil City/Oil City) single that would bring in Lang.  Altoona would get on the board in the fifth, but the Behrend Lions would stay on top to defeat them 5-1.

Dubensky led the squad in game one, hitting two of two at bats.  Josh Fyffe (Fredonia/Sharpsville) went on to lead the blue and white in game two, as he hit away three of four. Andrew Chrobak (New Castle/Laurel) stepped in to pitch game two and received the win, striking out four batters and giving up only four hits.

The men will be back in action tomorrow, April 6 as they travel to Bethany for a double-header match at 12:00 p.m.  The blue and white will go on to host the Lake Erie Storm on Wednesday, April 9 at the Behrend baseball field.  Action is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
