Behrend Baseball Falls to Thiel 8-5 in Non-Conference Game

The Penn State Behrend Lions hosted the Thiel Tomcats on Tuesday, April 15 for a non-conference game.  The men were defeated by the Tomcats 8-5.  This was the first loss for the blue and white since their trip to Florida over spring break.

The nine inning game remained scoreless till the top of the third. With runners on second and third, a balk would score one Thiel runner.  A sacrifice fly would add one more for the Tomcats and give them a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the third.

Then, in the fourth inning, Thiel would bring in three runs on a Weston Snyder double to left field, putting the Tomcats up 5-0.  The blue and white would close out the top o the fourth trailing 6-0.

The Behrend Lions would answer in the bottom of the fourth.
Dustin Dubensky (Punxsutawney/Punxsutawney) singled while Joe Breiter (Finleyville/Ringgold)  and Geoff Lang (Pittsburgh/North Allegheny) were walked to load the bases for the blue and white.  Then Adam Martin (Rochester/Rochester) blasted a two-out shot off the left field fence, driving in all three runners and closing the gap to 6-3.  Jon Gray (State College/State College) followed with an infield single, sending Martin to third. Gray would steal second, putting runners on second and third.  Senior catcher Paul Henry (Mamont/Kiski Area) came to the plate and hit a ground ball that was mishandled, allowing two more runners to score.  The game headed to the fifth inning with Thiel in front 6-5.

Thiel tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning to go up 8-5 heading to the sixth.  The Behrend Lions would try to rally, but would fall short.  The Tomcats would go on to win the game 8-5.   The blue and white are now 20-5 for the 2008 season and remain unbeaten in conference play with a 10-0 mark.

The men will be back in action on Thursday, April 19 when they travel to Bucknell for a full nine innings of play.  The game will begin at 3:30 p.m.  Then on Saturday, April 19, the blue and white will continue conference play by hosting the La Roche Redhawks.  The double-header is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
