Behrend Men's Basketball Earns Decisive Victory in Home 2006-07 Opener
The
Penn State Behrend men's basketball team opened the 2006-07 season with a
65-50 win over Elmira in the Behrend Tip-Off Tournament by forcing 22
turnovers and holding the Soaring Eagles to only 37% shooting from the
field.
With the win Behrend
advances to Saturday's Championship game against Ohio Wesleyan, a 96-31
winner over D'Youville.
Behrend led by two at the break, ahead 29-27. Both teams came out cold
from long range as Behrend made just two of 15 from deep, while Elmira
connected on only two of nine. In the second half Behrend moved its
lead to 12 points off a made three-pointer by freshman guard Justin Kovac
(Venetia/Peters Township) at the 10:43 mark. Kevin Buczynski (Erie/Villa
Maria) hit a chip shot off a nice pass from Nick Haller (Erie/Cathedral
Prep) to maintain the advantage. Buczynski, last season's AMCC Player of the
Year, picked up where he left a year ago. He finished with a game-high 28
points on 9 x 17 from the floor and 10-of-12 at the line. Buczynski's day
included a game-high 12 rebounds and a pair of blocks. Also in
double-figures was sophomore guard Tom Newman (Girard/Northwestern) with 13
points and three boards. Elmira was guided by KC Mendez who had 16 points
and four rebounds.
In game one on Friday, Ohio Wesleyan started fast out of the gate, opening
up a 30-8 lead on their way to a 46-16 cushion at the break. The
Battling Bishops cruised as well in the second half outscoring D'Youville
50-15 after the break. Ohio Wesleyan was led by by Matt Shirer who
scored 15 points in 21 minutes of action. The Bishops saw a balanced
attack where six players reached double digits in points. D'Youville
was led by Tom Kowalski's 13 points.
The consolation contest of D'Youville and Elmira will tip-off on Saturday at
1:00 p.m. and will be followed by the championship game at 3:00 p.m.
Then Behrend continues its season at Allegheny on Tuesday, November 21, with a non-conference game at 7:30 p.m. in Meadville.
