Behrend Softball Begins Season on a Tear

The Penn State Behrend softball team returned from its spring trip with plenty of momentum after going undefeated in ten games at Ft. Myers, Florida.  The Behrend Lions outscored their opponents 62-16 and are thrilled with the hot streak to begin the season.

Head coach Stacy Pondo said, “We are ecstatic with our fast start, and the victories have made our young but talented team much stronger.  Our upperclassmen provided the leadership needed to keep the team on track during the week.  Now we are more confident and ready to take on our opponents as we begin our regular season play."

A number of players had standout performances on the Florida trip.  Freshman pitcher Julie Koman (McKees Rocks/Montour) was named Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) pitcher of the week for March 13.  Koman was outstanding in her first college games, pitching 33 innings without giving up a single run.  She won five of the ten games and also earned two saves on the trip.  Koman threw 53 strikeouts, walked only five, and yielded just 15 hits.  Macha hit .545, with four runs and seven RBIs.

At the plate, Behrend (10-0) was led by freshman Katie Whitby (Tyrone/Tyrone), junior Kristin Macha (Export/Franklin), and freshman Nikki Kaschauer (South Park/South Park).  Whitby went 15 of 31 at the plate for a .484 average, scored 14 times, and leads the team with ten RBIs.  Macha batted .458 while knocking in six runs, and Kaschauer batted .500 on 28 at-bats, adding eight RBIs.

The blue and white look resume play on Sunday, March 18, when they travel to Bethany to take on the Bison in a double-header starting at 1:00 p.m.
