Behrend Lions Softball
Set To Host 2006 AMCC Tournament as # 1 Seed
The
Penn State Behrend softball team (31-7, 16-2) will host the AMCC Tournament May
5-7 after capturing the AMCC regular season championship.
The
blue and white clinched the #1 seed and right to host the conference
tournament with a sweep of Lake Erie on April 26.
This weekend's AMCC Tournament is a double-elimination format
between the top four remaining teams. #1 seed Penn State
Behrend and # 2 seed Pitt-Bradford earned byes into the weekend,
while #4 Frostburg State advanced after defeating #5 La Roche and #3
Lake Erie advanced after defeating # 6 Medaille.
Play begins on Friday, May 5 at 12:15 p.m. when #1 Behrend will
battle #4 Frostburg State. Behrend and Frostburg State (21-15,
13-5) split their regular season doubleheader on April 9 at
Frostburg. The Bobcats took game one 3-0, before the Behrend
Lions roared back with a 4-1 win in game two.
#2 Pitt-Bradford (31-5, 16-2) will play # 3 Lake Erie (24-13-1,
14-4) in the second game on Friday at 2:45 p.m.
Behrend head coach Stacy Pondo said, "We're
excited about hosting the tournament. It's something new for
the program. This team has worked very hard all year long to
get to where they currently are."
The
Behrend Lions enter the tournament with momentum on their side after
having won five of their last six games.
Junior Kristin Macha (Export/Franklin) at
.475 and freshman Katie Whitby (Tyrone/Tyrone) at .435 are first and
second in the AMCC in batting average, while freshman Nikki Kaschaur
(South Park)
ranks fourth in the conference in batting average (.412).
Freshman pitcher Julie Koman (McKees Rocks/Montour) leads the AMCC
in ERA (0.64) and opposing batting average (.156). Pondo said,
"We look for our key players to step up
their play and hope that each of them step up to the plate and have
great days."
