Behrend Advances in 2006 AMCC Softball Tournament

The #1 seeded Penn State Behrend softball team (32-7) defeated #4 seed Frostburg State (21-16) by a score of 3-0 in the first game of the AMCC Championship Tournament on Friday at the Behrend Fields.

Freshman pitcher Julie Koman (McKees Rocks/Montour) controlled the game as she has done all season for the Behrend Lions.  Koman pitched a complete game shutout to pick up the win.   She gave up only two hits with zero walks, while striking out 11 Bobcat batters.

Behrend scored twice in the bottom of the fourth inning to take the lead.  Junior infielder Kristen Macha (Export/Franklin) started it off with a walk.  Freshman Kelly Irish (State College/State College) then entered the game as a pinch runner.  Freshman shortstop
Rachelle Lawrence (Warren Center/Northeast Bradford) reached on an error as Irish advanced to third.  With runners on the corners freshman Lindsay Baughman (Warren/Warren) doubled to score both runners as Behrend took the 2-0 lead.

The blue and white would add to their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Lawrence singled and reached third on a sacrifice by Baughman.  Sophomore outfielder Lauren Lubic (Bridgeville/South Fayette) then singled home Lawrence to make it 3-0.

Frostburg would threaten in the seventh inning as Behrend errors had Bobcat runners on second and third.  Koman would respond however, striking out Sarah Savoye to end the game.

For Behrend, Lawrence went 1-for-3, reached base twice, and scored two runs.  Baughman went 1-for-2 at the plate with two RBIs.  For Frostburg, Kaitlyn Wagner was 1-for-2 with a double and Lydia Ratliff earned the Bobcats other hit.

In the second game on Friday,
#2 Pitt-Bradford (32-5) edged # 3 Lake Erie by a 1-0 score in extra innings.  Starting pitchers Kristy Zavinski for Pitt-Bradford and Ashley Johnson for Lake Erie were both magnificent.  Each hurler held their opponent scoreless through the first seven innings of play, and Zavinski would add a scoreless eighth inning of work.  Pitt-Bradford would finally get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth as senior Michelle Pushinsky made it to second on an error.  Junior Brittany McLean then came up big for the Panthers as she slammed a walk-off triple, scoring McLean and earning the win for Bradford.

In the third game of the day on Friday, it was the Lake Erie Storm (25-14-1) getting past the Frostburg State Bobcats 3-1 in an elimination game.  The Storm made several terrific defensive plays and capitalized on six Frostburg errors to get the win and knock the Bobcats out of the AMCC Tournament.  Frostburg falls to 21-17 on the season, while Lake Erie advances to Saturday play and will face the loser of the Behrend vs. Bradford game which will kick off Saturday play at 10:00 a.m.
