Behrend Set to Meet Pitt-Bradford in AMCC Championship

The Behrend Lions squared off against the Pitt-Bradford Panthers in Game 4 of the AMCC Conference Tournament on Saturday, May 6.  Both teams entered the second day of action 1-0 in the double elimination tourney.

Bradford threatened to score early in the top of the first, after a sacrifice bunt put Catrina Retterer at second and Brittany McLean singled up the middle, but a strong throw from center field trapped Retterer in a rundown that resulted in the second out of the inning.  Behrend would go on to score first, posting three runs in the bottom of the third.  Katie Whitby (Tyrone/Tyrone) started the scoring with a single that scored Kelly Irish (State College/State College).  Kristen Macha (Export/Franklin Regional) would drive in two more with a bullet down the left field line.

Bradford would respond in the top of the fifth when Jamie Keane sent a two-run blast over the center field wall, pulling the Panthers within a run, 2-3.  Behrend left the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, while Bradford stranded two in the sixth.  Julie Koman sealed the 3-2 victory in the seventh, pitching a complete game.  Koman allowed two runs on seven hits, walked two and fanned seven.  Both Whitby and Nikki Kaschauer (South Park/South Park) went 2-for-3 at the plate.  Whitby also scored once and drove one run in.

Game two featured the Lake Erie Storm against Pitt-Bradford, with the winner going on to face Behrend.  The Storm struck first, manufacturing a run on an RBI single from Sarah Miller.  Brittany McLean and Christy Zavinski gave the Panthers the lead in the fourth when they combined to hit back-to-back home runs.  McLean belted a two-run shot just fair of the left field pole, before Zavinski went yard over the right-center wall.  Lake Erie would come back to tie it in the sixth, but Pitt-Bradford would score again in the seventh, for the 4-3 victory.

Penn State Behrend and Pitt-Bradford will meet tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. in the championship game.  Bradford enters having already lost once and needs to win two in a row against a Behrend team that is 2-0 in the tournament.  Behrend needs just one more victory against the Panthers to capture the AMCC crown.
