Behrend Softball Splits With Lake Erie, Remains Third in AMCC

Penn State Behrend softball split an AMCC doubleheader on Friday, April 13 against the Lake Erie Storm.  The women won game one by a count of 5-0 and were downed 8-5 in game two.  Behrend’s mark goes to 5-3 in the conference and 14-9 overall while the Storm are now at 7-3 in the AMCC and 9-11 overall.  Behrend currently sits at third in the AMCC behind La Roche and Lake Erie.

Game one remained scoreless through four and half innings until Behrend ended the scoring drought in the bottom of the fourth with a Katie Whitby (Tyrone/Tyrone) double that drove in two runs.  Julie Koman (McKees Rocks/Montour) was the game’s star performer.  Koman game up just three hits in a complete game victory and fanned five.  Nikki Kaschauer went 4 for 4 from the plate with a double and an RBI.  Whitby was 2 for 4 with a game high four RBIs.

The Storm came back with a vengeance in game 2, putting a five-run second inning together.  Lake Erie put two runners on base and then capitalized off three straight walks.  Two more base hits later in the same inning along with two more runs in the next inning drove the run total up to seven.  Behrend threatened in the bottom of the fourth, but left the inning with the bases loaded.  They would get on the scoreboard in the fifth, when Kristen Macha (Export/Franklin Regional) singled home Whitby from second.  The women finally got to Lake Erie pitcher Stevie Banks in the sixth inning, putting four runs on the board and making the game interesting.  Their comeback would fall short however, and the Storm would hold on for the 8-5 win.

Behrend will be in action again on Saturday, April 14 when they travel to face AMCC opponent Pitt-Greensburg.
