Behrend Softball Sweeps AMCC Home Doubleheader Versus Hilbert

The Penn State Behrend Lions picked up two more conference wins on Wednesday, April 23 against AMCC opponent Hilbert.  The Behrend Lions (24-10, 10-4) won game one 6-3 and earned a 8-0 win in game two.  Before the games Behrend's Lauren Lubic (Bridgeville/South Fayette) and Kelly Houghton (Jamestown/Jamestown) were recognized for senior day.

Behrend got on the board early in the first inning as Katie Whitby (Tyrone/Tyrone), Allison Babish (Coraopolis/Montour), and Nikki Kaschauer (South Park/South Park) all reached base and were driven in as the Behrend Lions took a 3-0 lead after the first inning.

The blue and white once again threatened in the third inning, getting runners to the corners, but could not convert and the game headed to the fourth with Behrend leading 3-0.

In the fifth inning Rachelle Lawrence (Warren Center/Northeast Bradford) smacked a RBI triple, Laura Frischkorn (Beaver Falls/Beaver Falls) belted a RBI double, and pitcher Maddie Wieser (Erie/Collegiate Academy) helped her own cause with a RBI double as Behrend added three more runs to take a 6-0 lead.

Hilbert got on the board in the top of the sixth inning when a two-out infield single that was the first hit of the game for the Hawks drove in a runner to make the score 6-1.  The Hawks mounted a rally in the seventh inning, driving in two more runs before Weiser got a strikeout to end the rally and secure the 6-3 win in game one.

Behrend got the offense going early in game two as Whitby walked to lead off the game and scored on an error.  Hilbert would get out of the inning before more damage could be done and the game would head to the second with the Behrend Lions up 1-0.  In the bottom of the third inning Behrend added to its lead when Lawrence’s RBI double scored Lubic  to make it 2-0.  Lawrence would also score to put Behrend ahead 3-0.

Behrend broke it open in the fifth as Babish tripled and was driven in by Kaschauer’s RBI single.  Lubic followed with a RBI triple and later scored as Behrend took a 6-0 lead.  The blue and white closed it out in the sixth by adding two more runs for the 8-0 win.  Frischkorn pitched a two-hitter, striking out five batters in the game two win.

Behrend is next in action at home on Saturday, April 26.  Mount Aloysius heads to Behrend for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
