Behrend Softball Gets Ready for AMCC Championship Tournament
The Penn State Behrend softball team finished the 2008 regular season on Sunday, April 27 when they split a pair of games against Frostburg State. The Behrend Lions conclude the regular season 27-11 overall and 13-5 in AMCC conference play. The women finished third in the conference, giving them the #3 seed going into the AMCC Tournament to be held in Buffalo, NY at Hilbert College.
The blue and white will begin tournament play against #6 Pitt-Greensburg. The Bobcats finished the season with a 8-12 overall mark and 8-10 record in the AMCC. Earlier this season, the Behrend Lions were defeated by Pitt-Greensburg 2-0 and 10-6. These two teams will meet on Friday, May 2 at 10:00 a.m.
Winning the regular season title was #1 seed Medaille (12-14,
16-2) and the Mavericks along with #2 Lake Erie will receive byes in the first round. The Mavericks will take on the winner of the Behrend/Greensburg contest, while the Lake Erie Storm will see the winner of #4 Pitt-Bradford
(11-17, 10-8) and #5 Frostburg State (16-20, 9-9).
Leading the blue and white headed into the postseason are a number of top
performers. Junior pitcher Julie Koman (McKees Rocks/Montour) leads
the AMCC in E.R.A. (1.17), strikeouts (123), and wins (17). Junior outfielder Katie Whitby (Tyrone/Tyrone)
leads the conference in triples (7) and stolen bases (14), while batting
.414 and scoring 41 runs this season. Junior second baseman Nikki
Kaschauer (South Park/South Park) leads the team in RBIs with 31, and is
hitting .404 on the season. Junior outfielder Allison Babish
(Coraopolis/Montour) is batting .336 on the season with 22 runs scored and
51 total bases, while senior outfielder Lauren Lubic (Bridgeville/South
Fayette) has 40 total bases and 22 runs scored with a .296 batting average
on the season.
The AMCC Championship Tournament will begin on Friday, May 2
and will conclude on Sunday, May 4 with the title game being played
at 11:00 a.m.
