Swimming and Diving Weekend Round-Up In a busy week of action for the Behrend Lions with meets against Washington & Jefferson on Wednesday, and Grove City on Saturday there were some excellent individual performances. Topping the list was the performance of freshman Cyndi Morales (Mexico City/Universidad Del Valle de Mexico) in the 1000 yard breaststroke against Washington & Jefferson. Morales set a new team record with a time of 10:55.25 and also qualified for the ECAC Championships. Morales is the first Penn State Behrend women's swimmer to qualify for this event. "Cyndi's performance was outstanding and it inspired her teammates," said head coach Jen Slack. In the Grove City meet freshman Melissa Pilewski (Cranesville/Villa Maria High School) also set a new team record in the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:38.80. On the men's side Dustin Fairchild, a freshman from Cory (Cory High School) collected three first-placed finishes against W & J in the 200 and 500 yard freestyle, and the 200 yard breaststroke. Fairchild's times in the 200 and 500 yard freestyle, 1:51.36 and 5:01.38 were season bests. "It is pleasing to see so many strong individual performances from all our swimmers. It is rewarding for the athletes to see the hard work they put in paying off in terms of improving times," commented Coach Slack. Next up for the blue and white is the last meet of the season, the Grove City Invitational, held on February 10 - 12. |
