Behrend Swimmers Step Up in ECAC Championships

The Behrend Lions had 13 members of the men's and women's swimming teams qualify and participate in the ECAC Championships at Rowan Univesity in New Jersey.

"This was an excellent achievement for a second-year team," said head coach Josh Heynes.  "We were excited to have thirteen swimmers qualify, and do very well against top Division III performers."

The men's team placed 8th out of 15 teams, while the women were 15th of 19. However, the men's 200 medley relay team of Casey Doody (Scarborough, ME/Cape Elizabeth ), Lucas Dushac (Indiana/Indiana), Jon Harding (Tunkhannock/Wyoming Seminary) , and Justin Lucas (Houston, TX/Cypress-Falls) were ECAC champions in the event posting a 1:40. This group also won the ECAC title in the 400 medley relay in 3:39.

Earning runner's-up finishes in the 100 and 200 backstroke was Doody in 55.23 and 2:00 respectively, and Dushac in the 200 breaststroke in 2:14. Dushac also finished third in the 100 breaststroke and 200 IM. Harding placed third in the 100 fly in 53.99.      

Also participating and helping the program establish numerous new team records were Ben Atkins (Pleasantville /Titusville), Alex Fertelmes (Cabot/Knoch), Eric Phillips (Monroeville/Gateway), Tom Vignolini (Fombell/Riverside), and Robb Christensen (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili).  The women's team qualified four swimmers including Tara Braden (Erie/Fairview), Samantha Cibula (Bradford/Bradford), Hollie Stash (North Huntingdon/Norwin), and Christine Williams (Seltzer/Pottsville). 

The men and women's swimming team will continue their season on Saturday, January 12, when they host Alfred University at 1:00 p.m.
