Men's Tennis
Opens AMCC Play at 1-0 With Win Over Altoona
Penn
State Behrend men's tennis ousted defending AMCC champion Penn State
Altoona on Sunday, March 26 at the Westwood Country Club in Erie,
PA. The men took the match five sets to four to start
conference play at 1-0.
Behrend was able to edge out the conference champs because of strong
performances by their top three singles players. Scott Shaw
(Tulsa, OK/Jenks) came from behind to win top-flight singles 1-6,
6-2, 6-3. Miles Boyea (St.
Vincent, WI/Upper Canada) dominated second-flight singles 6-2, 6-3
and Jim Palmer (Sharon/Sharon) won third-singles 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Trevor Dougherty (Meadville/Meadville) continued his strong season
from the sixth-flight position, winning 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
Shaw and Boyea beat out Altoona's top doubles team
8-4 to get the five wins necessary to claim the overall victory. Behrend's other two doubles teams fell 8-5 and 9-8.
Next up for men's tennis will be a pair of home
matches against Alfred and Frostburg on March 30 and 31.
