Behrend Fares Well at Fredonia State Invitational

The Penn State Behrend indoor track & field team were very pleased with the final outcomes in the Fredonia State Invitational on February 2, 2002.  The men and women set Behrend indoor standards for virtually every running event from 200 meters to 5000 meters, as well as new hurdle, high jump, pole vault and shot put standards.

With five competing teams in the Fredonia Invitational, the Behrend women came out on top in the women's 800 meter, 1,500 meter, and 4 x 800 meter relay.  In the 800 meter, Suzanne Szafran (Bradford/Bradford) placed first with a time of 2:35.52 and Jessica Sarver (Freeport/Freeport) and Jessica Knapp (Erie/McDowell) finished close behind taking second and third place in the event.  Sarver and Knapp were also the top two runners in the women's 1,500 meter.  Overall, the women finished in third place.

Several men led the Behrend Lions for an overall fourth place finish.  Matthew Hurray (Cranberry/Seneca Valley) finished first in the men's 55 meter dash with a time of 7.29.  Hurray also led the 200 meter dash along with Christopher Laugelli (Pittsburgh/Baldwin) who finished in second place.  David Ober (Pittsburgh/Baldwin) placed first in the 400 meter dash with a time of 53.31 while Jay Davids (Union City/Seneca) wrapped up points with a first place finish in the men's high jump event.

"We are holding our own against long established track and field programs," says first-year head coach Dave Cooper.  "This reflects the specialization afforded with the outstanding staff of seven part-time assistant coaches."  The Behrend Lions next meet will be on February 9 at the Slippery Rock Invitational beginning at 9:00 a.m.
