Track and Field Establishes Several New Records at Mount Union The Behrend Lions men's and women's indoor track and fields team were in action again this weekend competing in the Mount Union Invitational on February 5. Both the men's and women's teams finished in fifth place out of seven teams. Four more Penn State Behrend athletes qualified for the ECAC Indoor Track & Field Championships. Freshman Becky Gonzales from Morrisville (Piscataway High School) recorded a time of 8.91 in the 55-meter hurdles. Leisl Soergel, a freshman from Evans City (Butler High School) qualified for the 500-meter race with a time of 1:23.00. Wrapping up the batch of ECAC qualifiers were triple jumpers Shane Rock (Edinboro/General McLane) and Jon McKinney (Union City/Union City). Rock and McKinney took second and third place with distances of 44'2.75" and 43'9.75 respectively. It was also a good weekend for Behrend's relay teams. The women's 4 x 160-meter and 4 x 400-meter relay teams both set new Behrend records. The 4 x 160 team recorded a 1:30.30 mark. The team consists of Becky Gonzalez, Nicole Minewasser (Warren/Warren), Erica Smith (Franklin/Franklin), and Staci Banaszek (Erie/Harborcreek). The 4 x 400-meter team came home in a time of 4:22.50 to earn second place in the event. Members of this team are Erica Smith (Franklin/Franklin), Nicole Minewasser, Claire Manelick (Youngsville/Youngsville), and Leisl Soergel. The blue and white will be returning to Mount Union on February 26 for the Purple Raider Invite for their last meet of the regular season.
