Behrend Adds to Track & Field Staff

The Penn State Behrend Lions athletics department has announced the addition of several assistant coaches and technical advisors to its track & field staff for the 2002 indoor and outdoor seasons. The new staff will join first-year head coach Dave Cooper. They include Garrett Arndt, Greg Cooper, Max Alwens, Kate Heynoski, Bill Hoffman, Joe Sanford, and Gary Senyo.

Garrett Arndt will begin his first season as the assistant men's and women's cross country and track and field coach. Arndt was a four-year standout for the men's track and field team at Penn State Behrend, after starring at Fairview High School.  In Arndt's senior year he competed in the 4 x 400 relay at the ECAC Championships in Springfield, MA.  Arndt is currently seventh in the record books for the shot put with a distance of 37-11.0 and is third in the 4 x 400 with a combined time of 3:24.97. In 1999 and 2000, Arndt was the recipient of the Sportsmanship and Leadership award in track & field. Arndt was also a member of the Student Athletic Advisory Committee.  Arndt earned his bachelor's of science degree in psychology in 2000. In addition to serving as an assistant coach for both programs, he is pursuing a master's of business administration degree at Penn State Behrend.

Greg Cooper will be entering his first season as an assistant for the men's and women's track and field programs. Cooper will coach the long sprints and relay teams. He competed for four seasons as a member of the cross country team, and for four seasons as a member of the rack and field team. Cooper holds a host of Behrend records in the long sprints. He graduated from Penn State Behrend with a degree in MIS in 2001. While at Union City High School, he was a member of the state champion cross country team in 1996, and the state champion 3200 meter relay in 1997.

Rounding out the staff will be Max Alwens. He will lend his expertise to the Behrend Lions shot put and discuss throwers. He has coached several all-state throwers including a state champion and two all-americans. Kate Heynoski is a former scholastic standout from McDowell. She earned all-state honors four times and achieved All-American status as a high jumper. She continued her career at Ohio University where she was tabbed all-conference. Bill Hoffman will advise the Behrend hurdlers. He is a former PIAA champion, and has coached several all-state sprinters and hurdlers. Joe Sanford will provide technical advise in the pole vault. He is regarded as one of the top high school pole vaulter coaches in America. He has coached 11 All-Americans, 8 state champions, and a national pole vault champion. Gary Senyo will advise the Behrend Lions javelin throwers. Senyo coached numerous state qualifiers and all-state performers while at Union City and Corry High School. 

The outdoor track & field season begins March 22 and 23 at the Clarion Invitational.
