Behrend Track and Field Teams Open Outdoor Season at Clarion

The Penn State Behrend men's and women's track and field teams opened up their outdoor season on March 26 at the Clarion Invitational.

In cold conditions several Behrend athletes put in strong early season performances. Isiah Meek (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) qualified for the ECAC Championships in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 15.34. The men's team had three first place finishes. Brad Ruffo (West Middlesex/West Middlesex) took top spot in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 33:28.34. Ruffo's time also set a new Behrend record. Mike Barlett (Erie/Iroquois) finished first in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:03.20 and the 4x400 relay team of Mike Barlett, Isiah Meek, Joe Wilcher (Irwin/Penn Trafford), and Eric DiLuzio (Erie/Cathedral Prep) also took first place in a time of 3:29.69.

Two other Behrend records were set on the day. Becky Gonzalez (Morrisville/Piscataway) set a new mark in the 100-meter high hurdles with a time of 17.15 and Carlos Lopez (Perth Amboy, NJ/Perth Amboy) set a new record in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 58.05.

Next up for the Behrend Lions is the Western PA Championships to be held at Carnegie Mellon University on April 2 starting at 10:00 a.m.
