Track and Field Excels at Slippery Rock Invitational The Behrend Lions track and field teams were in action again this weekend at the Slippery Rock Invitational held at Slippery Rock, PA. In a great day for the blue and white five Behrend records were broken and Behrend athletes had ECAC qualifying performances in five new events and nine overall. On the men's side, Dan Mitchell (Bloomsburg/Bloomsburg) qualified for ECACs in the javelin with a throw of 175'5". Another new ECAC qualifier was Dennis Scheuer (McKean/General McLane). Scheuer had a school record-breaking time of 57.00 in the 400-meter hurdles. Two men's distance runners also posted times good enough to break school records. Harry Balwick (Erie/McDowell) broke his own mark in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:09.14 while Brad Ruffo (West Middlesex/West Middlesex) reset his 10k mark in a time of 33:22.80. On the women's side, Leisl Soergel (Evans City/Butler) qualified in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:20.88. The mark broke the school record she set last week at the Mount Union Invitational. Becky Gonzalez (Morrisville/Piscataway) had the final new ECAC qualifying performance with a time of 15.84 in the 100-meter hurdles. She also broke her own school record on the way to qualifying for ECACs. The track and field teams' next meet is the IUP Invitational on April 23. On April 30 the teams head to Baldwin Wallace.
