Banaszek Sets Behrend High Jump Record at Slippery Rock Invite

The Penn State Behrend Track & Field Team began its season Saturday, January 21 at the Slippery Rock Invitational.  Highlighting the event was senior Staci Banaszek (Erie/Harborcreek), who set a new Behrend record in the women's high jump with a jump of 5' 2".  The mark was a mere two and a half inches from the nationals qualifying height.  Banaszek also placed third in the long jump with a jump of 16' 8" and third in the triple jump with a 35' 10.5" jump.  Leisl Soergel (Evans City/Butler) contributed with a third place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:30.10.  Kim Chapman (Cranberry Township/Seneca Valley) advanced to the finals of the 55-meter hurdles where she finished third with a time of 9.33 seconds.

On the men's side, Brad Ruffo (West Middlesex/West Middlesex) and Jason Bem (Union City/Union City) dominated the 3000-meter run, Ruffo finished first (9:26.28), with Bem coming in right behind in second (9:44.55).  Other notable performers were Harry Balwick, (Erie/McDowell) with a 4:45.54 time in the 1600 meter run, Gabriel Delerme, (Cranberry Township/Seneca Valley) with a 25.00 in the 200 meter dash, and Dennis Scheuer, (McKean/General McLane) finished the 55 meter hurdles in 8.61 seconds.

The track and field team is in action again on Saturday, January 28 when they will be traveling to Case Western Reserve for a 12:00 p.m. meet.
