Behrend Track and Field Travels to Mount Union Invitational

The Penn State Behrend men's and women's track and field team traveled to their third indoor meet of the season, the Mount Union Invitational on Saturday, February 4.  The men team finished in seventh place, while the women finished fifth.  There were nine teams in both fields.

Leading the way for the men was senior captain Shane Rock (McKean/General McLane) who leaped 43' 8.5" and will be making his seventh trip to the ECACs  in as many chances.  "The men performed well in many events, but Shane's  qualifying jump was the most outstanding performance of the day for the men, said coach Cooper."  Also having big showings were Harry Balwick (Erie/McDowell) who came in fifth in the 1000-meter run  with a time of 2:44.25, and Brad Ruffo (West Middlesex/West Middlesex) who also placed fifth in his event, running the 3000-meter in 9:14.58.

For the women, freshman Kim Chapman (Cranberry Township/Seneca Valley) had a stellar performance, contributing points in all three of her events.  Chapman qualified for the ECACs in the 500-meter dash with a winning time of 1:23.59.  "Kim had a great day.  She qualified for ECACs and helped the 4 x 400m relay team set a school record", said coach Cooper.  The school record was set by Chapman, Leisl Soergel (Evans City/Butler), Lauren Kremm (Greenville/Greenville), and Jaylan Giuliano (Harmony/Seneca Valley).  The team ran the 4 x 400m relay in 4:19.39, good enough for third in the event and a Behrend record.  Also coming up big for the women was Staci Banaszek (Erie/Harborcreek), who won the high jump with a jump of 1.60m.  Jenny Bailey (Corry/Corry) also contribute points for the women, with a second place performance in the 3000-meter run, finishing in 11:10.15.

The track and field teams has a few weeks to practice before their next meet on February 25 again at Mt. Union for the Purple Raider Invitational.  The meet is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
