Behrend Track Starts Season off Strong at
Disney Relays Starring for the men was Dan Mitchell (Bloomsburg/Bloomsburg) who won the javelin event with a throw of 57.43 meters. The throw provisionally qualifies Mitchell for the NCAA Nationals at season's end. Dennis Scheuer (McKean/General McLane) also performed well, winning the 400 meter hurdles with an ECAC-qualifying time of 57.38. Other ECAC qualifiers included Jon McKinney (Summerville/Union) with a triple-jump of 13.70 meters and Shane Rock (McKean/General McLane) also in the triple-jump with a leap of 13.26 meters. The men excelled in the team events, the 4 x 200 meter relay, 4 x 1600 meter relay, and the distance medley teams all set new school records with times of 1:36.26, 18:49.77, and 11:13.92, respectively. On the women's side Staci Banaszek (Erie/Harborcreek) won the women's triple and long jump events, while coming in third in the high jump. Banaszek qualified for ECACs in all three events finishing with a high jump of 5' 3.75", a long jump of 16' 8.75", and a triple jump of 34' 11.75". Banaszek also combined with Lauren Kremm (Greenville/Greenville), Jenny Bailey (Corry/Corry), and Leisl Sorgel (Evans City/Butler) to set a Behrend record in the 1600 sprint medley. Track and field is in action again on March 25, when they travel to Slippery Rock for the Slippery Rock Invitational.
