Behrend Track Starts Season off Strong at Disney Relays

The Behrend Men's and Women's outdoor track and field squad began their season Saturday, March 11 in Orlando, Florida at the Disney Relays.  The men finished second out of nine teams with 118.5 points while the women came in at fourth out of ten with 56 points.  The men set three school records, had one NCAA Nationals qualifier, and three ECAC qualifying performances.  The women broke one record, tied another, and had two ECAC qualifiers.

Starring for the men was Dan Mitchell (Bloomsburg/Bloomsburg) who won the javelin event with a throw of 57.43 meters.  The throw provisionally qualifies Mitchell for the NCAA Nationals at season's end.  Dennis Scheuer (McKean/General McLane) also performed well, winning the 400 meter hurdles with an ECAC-qualifying time of 57.38.  Other ECAC qualifiers included Jon McKinney (Summerville/Union) with a triple-jump of 13.70 meters and Shane Rock (McKean/General McLane) also in the triple-jump with a leap of 13.26 meters.

The men excelled in the team events, the 4 x 200 meter relay, 4 x 1600 meter relay, and the distance medley teams all set new school records with times of 1:36.26, 18:49.77, and 11:13.92, respectively.

On the women's side Staci Banaszek (Erie/Harborcreek) won the women's triple and long jump events, while coming in third in the high jump.  Banaszek qualified for ECACs in all three events finishing with a high jump of 5' 3.75", a long jump of 16' 8.75", and a triple jump of 34' 11.75".  Banaszek also combined with Lauren Kremm (Greenville/Greenville), Jenny Bailey (Corry/Corry), and Leisl Sorgel (Evans City/Butler) to set a Behrend record in the 1600 sprint medley.

Track and field is in action again on March 25, when they travel to Slippery Rock for the Slippery Rock Invitational.
