Track and Field Competes at Western PA Championships

The Behrend track and field team traveled to Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday, April 1 to compete in the Western PA Track and Field Championships.  The women placed twelfth, with 17 points while the men came in at eleventh, scoring 12 points.

Freshman hurdler, Kim Chapman (Cranberry Township/Seneca Valley) stole the show for the Behrend women, smashing the previous school record in the 400 meter hurdles by almost two seconds.  Chapman ran the event in 66.37 seconds, placing third and breaking Erica Smith's year-old record of 68.15 seconds.  The finish was good enough to give the women six points.  Also contributing for the women was Staci Banaszek (Erie/Harborcreek), who placed sixth in the women's long jump with a leap of 16' 7.75".

The men were led by Jon McKinney (Summerville/Union), who won the men's triple jump by leaping 45' 5.25".  McKinney's finish gave the men ten points.  Shane Rock (McKean/General Mclane) gave the men points, also in the triple jump, when he finished at 42' 11".

Look for Behrend track again on Saturday, April 8 when they travel to Mount Union for the Mount Union Invitational.
