Track & Field Competes at Mount Union, Mitchell Qualifies for Nationals

Track and Field competed at the Mount Union Invitational on Saturday, April 8, where junior Dan Mitchell (Bloomsburg/Bloomsburg) provisionally qualified for the NCAA National Championships by throwing a javelin 193' 6", currently the fifth best mark in the nation.  Behrend track also qualified five others for the ECAC Championships, and broke two school records.

On the men's side, junior Jon McKinney (Summerville/Union) and senior Shane Rock (McKean/General McLane) finished first and second in the men's triple jump as both earned ECAC qualifying marks.  McKinney jumped 43' 9.5" while Rock was close behind with a mark of 43' 6.75" in the event.  Behrend Lions runners also won the 4 X 100m relay, as a time of 41.77 was turned in by the team of Rock, freshman Gabe Delerme (Cranberry Township/Seneca Valley),  senior Dennis Scheuer (McKean/General McLane), and freshman Phil Stuczynski (Girard/Girard).

For the women, freshman Lauren Kremm (Greenville/Greenville) set a new Behrend record in the 100m dash and qualified for ECACs with a time of 12.58.  Kremm's successful day continued as she also placed second in the 200m dash, running a time of 27.43 in the finals.  The other school record that fell came down as freshman Kim Chapman (Cranberry Township/Seneca Valley) finished with a time of 15.82 to place second in the 100m hurdles and secure an ECAC qualifying mark.  Chapman also qualified for the ECAC Championships in the 400m hurdles, in which she ran a time of 1:06.35 and finished second.

Look for track and field back in action again on Saturday, April 15, when they will be competing in the Slippery Rock Invitational, scheduled for 10:00 a.m.
