Staci Banaszek Honored as Female Athlete of the Year

The 2005-06 Cheryl Ramsdell-Anderson Female Athlete of the Year winner is senior track & field athlete Staci Banaszek (Erie/Harborcreek).  She was honored on Sunday, April 30 at Behrend's Annual Athletics Picnic.

Banaszek holds several Behrend track and field records including establishing new marks in the long jump (17' 1.5"), the high jump (5'5"), and the triple jump (36'9") during the 2006 indoor season. She is an All-ECAC indoor performer in all three events and qualified provisionally for the NCAA Championships in the high jump and triple jump. She is also the record holder in all three events for Behrend's outdoor season and has qualified for the ECAC Championships in late May. In addition, Banaszek entered the year as a member of the record-holding 4x160M relay team.

Banaszek was also named Behrend's Female Scholar Athlete of the Year. To be eligible, a student must have attained at least a fifth semester standing, must have competed as a varsity athlete during the current academic year, and must have earned a cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.40. Previously, Banaszek was named to the Academic All-Conference squad and is a member of the National College Athletic Honor Society (NCAS).

Head coach Dave Cooper said, "Staci has been a steady and outstanding jumper all four years at Behrend.  She holds every school jump record and will be difficult to replace.  She has added so much to our program in many ways."

Banaszek will next compete with track and field at the Mason-Dixon Conference Championships which will be held May 5-6 at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia.
