Behrend Has Nine Qualify for ECACs at Mason Dixon Championships

The Penn State Behrend track and field team traveled to Newport News, VA to compete at the Mason Dixon Championships on Saturday, May 5.  The team had a strong performance with nine ECAC qualifying performances and was again led by senior captain Staci Banazek (Erie/Harborcreek), who broke her own school record in the high jump with a leap of 5' 6".  The jump provisionally qualifies Banazek for the NCAA nationals held on May 25-27.

The women's team finished seventh with a total of 67 points and chalked up four ECAC qualifying performances.  Banazek had two third-place finishes with a 16' 8.75" long-jump and a 35' 11.50" triple jump.  The two leaps were both good enough for ECAC qualification and gave the women twelve points.  Jenny Bailey (Corry/Corry) ran the 500-meter run in 19:02.17, a second place finish that punched her ticket to the ECACs and added eight points to the women's total.  The 4x100 meter relay team of Kim Chapman (Cranberry Township/Seneca Valley), Lauren Kremm (Greenville/Greenville), Leisl Soergel (Evans City/Butler), and Jaylan Giuliano (Harmony/Seneca Valley) combined to place fourth with a time of 51.85, qualifying them for the ECACs as well.

The men placed fifth with 37 points and had five individuals qualify for ECACs, Dennis Scheuer (McKean/General McLane), Jon McKinney (Summerville/Union), Shane Rock (McKean/General McLane), Dan Mitchell (Bloomsburg/Bloomsburg), and the 4x100 meter relay team.  Scheuer placed third in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 57.02.  McKinney came in fourth in the triple jump, with a leap of 43' 9".  Rock was right behind McKinney in the event, placing sixth and jumping 43' 4.25".  Mitchell chucked the javelin 180', winning the event and beating the competition by over fifteen feet.

Track and field will have this weekend off as they rest up for the ECACs championships, held on May 18-19.
