Behrend Track & Field Has Several Top Eight Finishes at ECAC Championships

The Penn State Behrend track and field team traveled to Springfield College May 18-19 to compete at the 2006 ECAC outdoor track and field championships.  The women finished the championships with 16 points, putting them in 19th place out of 47 competing teams.  The men ended tied for 30th place out of 51 teams, with a total of six points. 

The women had four representatives in six events and also a 4 x 100 meter relay team, and a 4 x 400 meter relay team.  Headlining the women's field was Staci Banaszek (Erie/Harborcreek) and Lauren Kremm (Greenville/Greenville).  Banaszek competed in the high, long, and triple jumps, while Kremm qualified in the 100-meter dash, the long jump, and as a part of both relay teams.  Banaszek grabbed ten points for the women when she won the high jump event after clearing 5' 4.25".  Banaszek finished in the triple jump event in fifth, with a leap of 35' 6", and was seventh in the long jump at 17' 0".  Kremm came in at sixteenth in the long jump with a jump of 15' 9" and 23rd in the 100 meter dash, running a 13.84.  The 4 x 100 meter relay team was fifteenth with a time of 51.99 seconds while the 4 x 400 relay team was fourteenth, at 4:10.64.  Also competing for the women were Kim Chapman (Cranberry Township/Seneca Valley), with a time of 16.43 in the 100-meter hurdles, and Jenny Bailey (Corry/Corry), who finished the 5000 meter run in a time of 19:09.32.

The men qualified four participants in three events, and also brought their 4 x 100 meter relay team.  Jon McKinney finished fifth in the triple jump with a distance of 44' 10.75" earning six points while teammate Shane Rock's mark of 43' 10" was good for eighth place and one point.  Senior runner Dennis Scheuer picked up the final point for the men with an eight place finish when he clocked in at 56.04 in the 400 meter hurdles.

Banaczek, McKinney, Rock, and Scheuer were all named All-ECAC which is awarded to the top eight finishers in each event.  Banaszek, a senior, and junior Dan Mitchell who finished eleventh in the javenlin throw, had previously qualified for the NCAA Championships and will travel to Benedictine University in Lisle, Illinois to compete May 25-27.  Banaszek will compete in the women's high jump while Mitchell will compete in the men's javelin throw.
