Track & Field Begin Indoor Season With a Bang, Set Six New Records

Behrend men's and women's indoor track & field kicked off their season Saturday, January 27 when they traveled down to the Case Western Reserve Invitational.  Both teams had an impressive start to their season, combining to set six new school records.

For the women, it was freshmen Carolyn Carter (Erie/Seneca) and Virginia Rodgers-Owens (Washington, D.C./P.L. Dunbar) who both had outstanding debuts in their first career college events.  Carter heaved the shot put 33' 7.5", eclipsing the old mark of 31' 10.5".  Rodgers-Owens ran the 55 meter dash in 7.61 seconds, breaking a six-year old school record of 7.71 seconds.  Rodgers-Owens also combined with three teammates to break the 4 x 200 meter relay record with a time of 1:54.69.

On the men's side, Mike Ferraro (Erie/Harborcreek) was the main attraction, breaking two individual records and one relay mark.  Ferraro sprinted the 55-meter dash in 6.77 seconds along with teammate Doug Stevenson (Sharpsville/Sharpsville) who finished with the same time as both broke the previous record of 6.80.  Ferraro went on to set a new school mark in the 200 meter dash, crossing in 23.84 seconds.  Ferraro along with three others set a new record in the 4 x 200 meter with a finishing time of 1:36.58.

The men and women are in action again on February 3 when they will travel to Mount Union for an 11:00 a.m. meet.
