Track and Field Opens Outdoor Season With Two New School Records

Men's and women's track and field kicked off the outdoor portion of their season on Saturday, March 24 at the California University of Pennsylvania Invitational.  Coach Cooper's crew set two new school records and qualified three individuals and one relay team over the course of the event.

Mike Ferraro (Erie/Harborcreek) starred for the men in the 100 and 200 meter sprints as well part of the 4 x 400 meter relay team.  Ferraro won the 100 meter dash, finishing in a school record time of 11.13 second.  He went on to grab second in the 200 meter dash before teaming up with Doug Stevenson (Sharpsville/Sharpsville), Phil Stuczynski (Girard/Girard), and Vinnie Krawiec (Erie/McDowell) for another second place finish and ECAC qualifying time (44.24 seconds).  Jon McKinney (Summerville/Union) had the men's third qualifying time of the day, winning the triple jump after he leapt a total of 44' 0.75".

For the women, it was Lisa Brozewicz (Wattsburg/Seneca) who set a new school record in the 3000 meter steeplechase and Virginia Rogers-Owens (Washington, DC/P.L. Dunbar) who qualified for the ECAC Championships with 100 meter dash time of 12.60 seconds.  Brozewicz's steeplechase time of 13:18.10 eclipsed a six-year old record previously held by Kathy Perry (14:02.09).  Rogers-Owens qualifying mark was 0.02 seconds off the school record, she currently holds the indoor record in the event.

Next up for track & field will be the Western PA Championships at IUP.  The meet will be held on Saturday, March 31 and is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.
